Sixth grade students at Oakdale Elementary School ask questions of students at Westside Middle School about becoming a middle school student. The middle school students are represented by John Thomsen and the elementary students by Colette deFrey.

John Thomsen: Hi!

John Thomsen: My name is Liz and I'm an 8th grader at Westside

John Thomsen: Do you have any questions/concerns about going to Westside?

Colette deFrey: Same here, but im not in 8th grade

Colette deFrey: Yeah

John Thomsen: what grade are you in?

Colette deFrey: 6th

John Thomsen: cool

Colette deFrey: Is legacies fun

John Thomsen: i've never been in legacies

Colette deFrey: ¿

Colette deFrey: oh

John Thomsen: but they do a lot of neat stuff

Colette deFrey: What is there to eat at lunch

Colette deFrey: ¿

John Thomsen: but I would think it all depends on if your friends were in it

Colette deFrey: what

Colette deFrey: ????

John Thomsen: for lunch there is a lot more choices

Colette deFrey: like what can you eat

John Thomsen: Personally I think the fodd is pretty bad

Colette deFrey: fodd?

John Thomsen: but not as bad as food in elementary

John Thomsen: food, sorry

John Thomsen: thay have pizza hut on Mon.

Colette deFrey: good, what do you usually eat in lunch

John Thomsen: there's also burritos

John Thomsen: be right back

Colette deFrey: amy, so can you answer some questions that we have

Colette deFrey: please

John Thomsen: for math you either take Math 7, Pre-algebra, or Algebra, which is by invitation and

recommendation

Colette deFrey: do people get stuffed in lockers?

John Thomsen: No, they're a tad too small.

Colette deFrey: how big?

John Thomsen: They're only half lockers.

Colette deFrey: phew

Colette deFrey: how much time do you have between class

John Thomsen: 3-4 Minutes, depending on which periods it is.

Colette deFrey: is it hard to get to class on time

Colette deFrey: ?

Colette deFrey: Is the prinicpal nice?

John Thomsen: No, but it can be complicated getting through the halls because kids feel the need to stand in

huge groups and talk between classes.

Colette deFrey: oh

John Thomsen: The principal is female and I have never personally met her, but she seems nice enough.

John Thomsen: The vice-principal is a male and also seems nice, but he only began his job here this year.

Colette deFrey: Was the first day of middle school hard to learn what to do?

Colette deFrey: never met her?

John Thomsen: The first day is without the 8th graders and all you do is stay in homeroom

Colette deFrey: cool

John Thomsen: in animal kingdoms they disect, frogs, worms fish pig, bugs

John Thomsen: what questions do u have about the middle school?

Colette deFrey: In sports, what are the coaches like?

John Thomsen: the PE teachers are really nice

John Thomsen: mr. glanzer and mrs. jansen

Colette deFrey: ok What pranks do the other students play?

John Thomsen: there are teachers that coach different sports, but since i don't play a sport, then i don't really

know a whole ot about theml

John Thomsen: there aren't much pranks at the school

Colette deFrey: ok thanks

Colette deFrey: What do your PE uniforms look like

John Thomsen: just to let you know i'm an 8th grader

Colette deFrey: ok what math class are you in

Colette deFrey: And who's your teacher

John Thomsen: they're black shorts with gray top

John Thomsen: i have a whole bunch of teachers

Colette deFrey: What about for math

John Thomsen: math, englsih, social studies, and the other language u take

John Thomsen: mrs. spady

John Thomsen: she's my math teacher

Colette deFrey: Is she nice

Colette deFrey: I'm taking pre-algebra right now even though I

John Thomsen: she's really nice. if u get mrs. kent for your 7th grade teacher, then that's the teacher i had

John Thomsen: she's really nice

Colette deFrey: 'm in 6th grade I have Mrs. Koski

John Thomsen: you'l be in algebra next year

John Thomsen: i know mrs. koski

John Thomsen: i'm in algebra now

Colette deFrey: Tobie's the one in pre-algebra

John Thomsen: she's not my teacher though-i just see her around school

John Thomsen: cool

Colette deFrey: I kind of know Mrs. Spady because she teaches in the class room next to mine

John Thomsen: yep

John Thomsen: she's nice

Colette deFrey: yeah

John Thomsen: what's ur favorite subject in school?

Colette deFrey: Tobie's is math

Colette deFrey: Leslie's is PE

John Thomsen: cool

John Thomsen: PE is fun in middle school

John Thomsen: only you still have to run the mile both years

Colette deFrey: Kyle's is PE he just joined us

Colette deFrey: Who is a good history teacher

Colette deFrey: And who do you have

John Thomsen: 7th grade PE classes are all girls or all boys. 8th grade PE is co-ed

John Thomsen: cool

Colette deFrey: ok

John Thomsen: mr. moore is a good history teacher

John Thomsen: you take history in 8th grade

Colette deFrey: Yeah, that's the room i take math in

John Thomsen: mr. dorn is a good social studies teacher for 7th grade. he was my teacher

John Thomsen: cool

Colette deFrey: Do you know Mrs. Dugeon

John Thomsen: it's a really small room though

Colette deFrey: and is she nice

John Thomsen: i know who she is, but i never had her for a teahcer

John Thomsen: so i don't know what she's like

Colette deFrey: ok Do you play an instrument

John Thomsen: yep

John Thomsen: i play the flute

John Thomsen: mr. jenkins-the band teacher-he is really nice

Colette deFrey: Did you play in the band-o-rama

John Thomsen: yep

Colette deFrey: Were you the person who played the solo in that one song

John Thomsen: i'm not sure

John Thomsen: do u remember the song title?

Colette deFrey: It was likeSomething of Babylon i think

John Thomsen: no that wasn't me. that was julia

Colette deFrey: ok What school did you come from in District 66

John Thomsen: i did want to play the solo though

John Thomsen: i went to Swanson

Colette deFrey: What do you do during home room?

John Thomsen: it's a 20 minute period that you just listen to the annoucements for the day and talk

Colette deFrey: So you don't really do anything then?

John Thomsen: if ur scheduled for a game, then you can play a certain game with another homeroom

John Thomsen: not a whole lot

Colette deFrey: ok

John Thomsen: there are games called woofle ball, kickball, and crazy games like that that you play somtimes

in home room

Colette deFrey: About how many students are in your classes

John Thomsen: i have a debate class that only has 12 people

Colette deFrey: Are you in EY then

John Thomsen: but the rest of them have over 20

John Thomsen: no

John Thomsen: debates not EY

Colette deFrey: do u get food during the passing priod

Colette deFrey: *period

John Thomsen: nope. only at lunch and after school

John Thomsen: there's pop machines and other stuff

John Thomsen: but u have to eat school food though

Colette deFrey: othats good

John Thomsen: for lunch only

John Thomsen: yep

Colette deFrey: this is kyle

Colette deFrey: wat happens if u falll asleep during class

John Thomsen: teacher wakes u up

John Thomsen: i've necer done that before so, i don't really know what happens

Colette deFrey: do u get in a trouble

John Thomsen: i think the teacher just wakes u up and u may go to the office

Colette deFrey: wat grade can u pLAY SPORTS

John Thomsen: both grades

John Thomsen: only there may be sports with only certain grades can participate in
