"Pro" vs. "Con" Debates

Take a controversial subject, such as:


Burning the U.S. flag

Using Animals to Test Drugs or Beauty Products


How might one's opinion about the above subjects be influenced by the list of factors that were developed in the list of factors created in part 3 of "Investigating Letters to the Editor"? Have a brief Pro-Con debate about one of the above subjects (or another not on this list).

Let students choose Pro or Con sides. Repeat the debate, with students changing sides to argue the opposite point of view. If there are topics of local or school concern which can be used to illustrate these points, that is very valuable.
